Written Reflection:
We were assigned the whole day trip. We filmed little parts of everything we did during the day. We started out at DC Central Kitchen where we all were assigned places to help. Most of us were chopping up vegetables and some were assigned with the fruits. It was really fun to be around everyone and be able to work with our hands because we knew that that work was really going to be useful and was going to help so many people. Everyone that worked in the kitchen was so nice to us when we were there and they were very appreciative of our help. After our volunteer hours were up and after our lunch we went to the National Coalition for the Homeless which was our favorite part of the entire trip. Hearing the stories of the brave individuals was very eye-opening and moving. We always talk in class about the experiences people go through and the reasons they become homeless but hearing it firsthand made it really real for me. The three individuals who spoke were so brave to share their stories and we are so thankful that they did because it really speaks on the various reasons people become homeless, the struggles they went through, and most importantly, where they are today to be able to tell their stories. Then pizza with Josh was very interesting because his job is so involved in the homeless issue, he was able to provide amazing insight on how he and his company are working on making a change in Appalachia. Then it was time for all of us to go into the local parks and hand out the clothes and toiletries we had prepared. We both had women’s clothes, and only really handed out two or three things, but the whole experience was very impactful. One woman was with her boyfriend and she ended up taking two sweaters that she really liked. They were both talking to us and were very interested in what we were doing and where we were from. They were also thankful for the clothes and toiletries. They were extremely outgoing people and very friendly towards us. It was great to have a regular conversation with them and get to know them a little bit. It was clear that a simple interaction made them very happy. Overall the whole experience was a great time. Being able to spend time with my classmates and get to know them more was so much fun. More importantly, being with everyone with such a passion for a large issue around the country was so moving. We learned so much more about homelessness during our trip because of meeting individuals with their own stories and that is very special.
